| The area known today as Leland was not established until 1712. However, the natives inhabited the area long before that time. These early inhabitants did not come into contact with the Europeans until 1634. French explorers looking for a passage to the Orient were the first to visit the area. Instead of a passage, they found a great deal of furs. This discovery brought more Europeans to the area. | |||
